Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary was established in the year of 1984 by separating regions from the Odanthode Malavaram of Thalassery special division which was formerly a private forest. It is located at a distance of 50 Km from Thalassery and 66 Km from Kannur. It is spread over an area of 55 sq km.The Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary is home that has vast variety of flora and fauna within the Sanctuary.The highest peak is Katti Betta which is 1145m. high from the sea level. The most superior Time to visit the Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary in the month of September to March.Although it can be visited throughout the year.The annual rainfall around Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary is about 3,000 mm.

The sanctuary lies between latitudes 11o 54 and 11o 59 north latitudes and 75o 47 and 75o 57 east longitudes.Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary is one of famous tourist attraction that fascinating the people from the whole world.

The forest types include West coast tropical evergreen forest, West coast tropical semi evergreen forest, South Indian moist deciduous forest, Southern hilltop evergreen forest and plantations.A major wildlife of Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary includes Elephant, Bison, Sambar, Deer, Boar, Sloth Bear, Leopard, Jungle Cat and different types of squirrels.

There are Fauna diversity including 48 species of mammals, 231 species of birds, 172 species of reptiles, 38 species of amphibians and 40 species of fishes are found here.It consists of 961 species of flowering plants.Rivers here are still crystal clear and unpolluted. The Special attraction toward tourist is that Trekking and boating is performed in the sanctuary.

Forest Type
Forest coast tropical evergreen and west coast semi evergreen forests are predominant. There are about 490 ha of teak and eucalyptus plantations within the forest area.

Flora in Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary
In the evergreen areas the following species are found: vellapine (Vateria indica), Mesua ferrea, Mechilus macrantha, Calophyllum elatum, Cullenia rosayroona, Magnifera indica, Toona cillata, Myristica Species, Euphorbia Longana, Strobilanthes. The common trees in the semievergreen areas are Cinnamomum Zeylanicum, Hopea parviflora, Largestroemia lanceolata, Xyliaxylocarpa, Mallotus, Philippinensis.

Fauna in Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary
A variety of animals and birds usually found in the Western Ghats are seen here. Different kinds of deer, boar, elephant, and bison are quite common. Leopard, jungle cat and various types of squirrels are sighted.

Wildlife Tourism (Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary)
One can reach the Aralam sanctuary by road from Thalasseri (45 kms) and Kannur (45kms). The nearest railway station is Thalassery and the nearest airport is Kozhikkod, 113 kms from Irutti. The infrastructure for tourism development is limited at present, but steps are being taken by the Forest Department to improve the situation.

Visiting Timing: 8 AM to 4 PM.

How to Reach:
By Train: The nearest railway station is located at Thalassery, about 50 km.

By Bus: Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary is well connected by road network. The area is accessible by road from Thalassery, Kannur, Wayanad and Virajpet.

By Airport: Karipur International Airport, Kozhikode about 71 km from Thalasserry town.
